P2: MICROCAMPAGNE

Sustainability

For this project, we tried to organise a small-scale action, in the theme of sustainable fashion. For this, we each chose an issue, such as water pollution, decline in biodiversity or land degradation that has the textile sector as its cause. I chose the issue, air pollution, and I wanted to work around waste and recycling.

What is air pollution?

Air pollution is both a local and global problem. It is a pollution of the environment by chemical, physical or biological components that causes the natural properties of the atmosphere to change. When we talk about air pollution, we always talk about three of the same pollutants, namely particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ground-level ozone. (Air pollution, s.d.)

What causes air pollution?

02

Air pollution has many different causes, including burning fossil fuels to generate electricity, as well as agriculture, volcanic eruptions, industrial processes and solvent use. The causes can be divided into two major groups. We have anthropogenic causes, for example exhaust fumes from cars and factories, as well as smoke from cigarettes. And we have natural causes. Namely, nature in turn also causes pollution in the form of entrained dust and sea salt aerosols. However, one of the biggest causes of air pollution is waste disposal. We, as humans, live in a disposable society. We go to the shop, fruits and vegetables there are packed separately in plastic bags. We go shopping and get a new plastic bag with our purchase. We order those new trousers or jumper. This arrives in a plastic bag with a barcode on it. Afterwards, all that packaging ends up in the bin. If we sorted them correctly in the first place and didn't just throw them into nature. This creates masses of huge mountains of waste, which have to be processed and/or incinerated. (World Health Organization: WHO, 2019)

In other words, the fashion industry plays a big role in this story. On the one hand, we have the waste products emitted by the textile factories and, on the other, we have the huge mountain of plastic, which is used to package a parcel on, for example, zalando. However, the bags you get when buying in the shop also increase this mountain.

What problems does air pollution cause?

Air pollution primarily has a negative impact on human and animal health. Exposure to particulate matter indirectly reduces expected life expectancy. There is an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Moreover, it slows down the development of lung function in children and babies. Globally, almost seven million people a year thus die prematurely from air pollution. "Air pollution also has further environmental consequences, such as decline in biodiversity in certain ecosystems and impairment of vegetation and crop growth." (Health and environment, including air pollution and noise - Attention to EEA's work, s.d.) Finally, we also see damage to several cultural buildings and statues. We call this phenomenon acid rain. We speak of acid rain when acidifying substances dissolve in the raindrops.
